“The Panamanian Origins of Reggae in Español”

About This Research

This essay challenges the popular notions of Reggaeton’s history and association with Puerto Rico by focusing on Panama. The essay also traces the genre to black West Indian roots.

Leonardo Renato Aulder, aka Renato, is discussed as one of the founding fathers of reggae en español. Renato is interviewed and talks about many factors surrounding the genre, including the rise of the genre. Specifics between reggae, reggae en español, and rapping in Spanish are also explained.
